World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP)

What is WTC Health Program?

The World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program is a treatment program for responders and survivors (students, community residents, and area office workers) who were exposed to the dust cloud on 9/11 or present in lower Manhattan during the WTC clean-up.

Survivor applicants must have or believe they have a 9/11 related health condition to be screened. Initial screening and treatment at WTC Health Program is offered at no out-of-pocket cost for qualifying conditions.

Who Qualifies?

Anybody who was in the NYC Disaster Zone on September 11th, 2001 or during the World Trade Center clean-up and has or believes they have a 9/11 related health condition.  This includes students at Stuyvesant High School, High School for Economics and Finance, Leadership and Public Service High School, Murry Bergtraum, BMCC, P.S. 234, I.S. 89, P.S. 150 or any other lower Manhattan school located in the NYC Disaster Area.  StuyHealth provides assistance to people who were students in the NYC Disaster Area during this period.

Anybody who lived or worked below Houston Street and in certain parts of Brooklyn is also eligible.

What Types of Conditions Are Considered 9/11 Related?

The most common symptoms that may result from a WTC-related health condition are respiratory symptoms like coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and sinus congestion, stomach problems like acid reflux and more serious digestive issues, and mental health issues like PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Most cancers are covered as well. A full list of conditions is available here. Call the WTC Health Program call center at 1-888-982-4748 if you are unsure about whether your condition qualifies for coverage.

What if I Live Out of State or in Upstate New York?

Many StuyHealth members and others who were students in 2001 now live outside of New York City. Care through the WTC Health Program is available nationally. Check out our information page on the WTC Health Program’s Nationwide Provider Network.

How To Apply

Determine Your Eligibility

If you lived, worked, attended school, daycare, or adult day care in the New York City (NYC) Disaster Area between September 11, 2001 and July 31, 2002, or you were present in the NYC Disaster Area in the dust or dust cloud on September 11, 2001, you are eligible. That includes anybody who attended these schools during that period.

Survivors must also have or believe they have one covered condition. The list is quite extensive and available here. You do not need a prior diagnosis to apply.
